Once again, Apple (AAPL) has showed why analysts and Apple fans have been right to worry about Steve Jobs' health despite the company's assertions that everything is okay.
Translation: Before we did these tests, we didn't know what the problem was, and we thought it might be more serious).
One other note, critical to accuracy. You may want to modify the headline to read "Clusterstock blog claims..." As the headline as it stands is patently false according to the announcements by Apple and Steve Jobs. The headline as it stands is unfounded speculation. Were this a newspaper you would be printing a retraction without the qualifier.
Yeah, totally inacurate headline. Nowhere in either the Steve Jobs press release or any of the other Apple press releases does it say Steve Jobs is skipping Macworld because of his health. Nowhere.
Once again Henry is among that coterie of bloggers who is driving the rumor mill and complaining that Apple doesn't send out Steve Jobs proctology results (and videos). This is simply another hit dog trying to leverage no news into page hits - tiresome at best. They don't make these same demands of ANY other CEO now do they? No other technology CEO has this level of scrutiny and rumor.
Few other companies images are so tied with their CEO. Apples marketing purposely puts Jobs out there as a celebrity. Another company that springs to mind that does this is Virgin Group, but they don't have share holders to answer to either.
I do agree with you that most of the blogging sites took this way too far. But Apple didn't help themselves when they first said he was fine and now come out with the truth.
Actually, KRich if you did a reasonable survey of Apple's marketing you will find Jobs conspicuously absent. The only time he participates in announcements is making the announcement himself at the Marcone Center on campus or at the two conferences MacWorld and WWDC, or at the odd press conference. I suppose Disney doesn't count, Microsoft doesn't count, Dell doesn't count? And to speak to your "truth" comment, what exactly did he say? That he and his doctors noticed an issue with his ability to retain weight. They didn't know why, they did some tests - now apparently according to his statement - they know why. Nothing critical, just a semi-chronic condition they were watching and doing tests against. Why is it people can't read text anymore??
I agree, this is non-news. Steve Jobs has pancreatic cancer and is responding well to treatment. I agree with MasterNav that no other CEO out there is under this type of microscopic scrutiny. It's annoying and it needs to stop.
Steve Jobs has pancreatic cancer and is responding well to treatment.
He, HAD cancer, entirely in the past tense.
As for the article, it's ridiculous. First of all, it's Macworld, not MacWorld. If you're going to write about something then at least get the name right. More importantly, Steve's open letter does not say that he skipped the keynote for his health. It says that he enjoyed the holidays (while not preparing for the ill-timed Macworld Expo), and also that he decided to get to the bottom of his weight loss. Nothing suggests that he was impaired or unable to deliver the keynote.
Apple wasn't hiding any secrets either. We all knew he was slowly losing weight; nobody knew the exact cause. Does anybody in the public have any right to know that he didn't know the exact cause yet, pending more test results? It's not dishonest to not report that you don't know anything yet, and it's not like his health were rapidly deteriorating and immediate action was needed.
Steve Jobs will always be a pancreatic cancer survivor. He will always have it, it can always come back... He's a survivor. Those are odds anyone else out there with the disease would be envious of.
You are essentially correct Lkessler. I am a prostate cancer survivor myself and am currently in remission - not cured. There is no cure for cancer, just ways to fight it.
You also said he "... is responding well to treatment." He is not treating pancreatic cancer. The cancer issue is from years ago.
I think the only appropriate thing to say here is to wish him good health. Anyone whining about their stock prices can "suck it."
Ditto Douglas--how sad to put profits before people...
